Manufacturing and efficiency improvements

Manufacturing and efficiency improvementsManufacturing has continued to strive towards greatening its production flexibility to maintain customer service. As well as this, the team is having to adapt for changes in demand such as an increase in demand for Georgian style windows which by the very nature of the design require more glass apertures, sashes, deco and astragal bar. Manufacturing is also seeing an increased demand for Safestyle’s top quality composite door range.

Over the last month several initiatives have been in place to find efficiency improvements in the manufacturing process which have revealed several areas for improvement, which is an excellent result. As always the manufacturing team is stringent on waste and quality control and efforts have been made to make sure all staff are fully aware of any implications of loss in either.

This last month has been a busy yet rewarding time for the Engineering Department and during this period we have coined a borrowed the in-house Safestyle phrase, TEAM, Together Everyone Achieves More. We are continually working with Production, Technical & Quality to improve output, quality and reliability of machines to further enhance our products. We are closing the final few issues associated with the new profile with success, a great deal of work has been done in this area with the formation of cross functional action teams which are improving the overall finished quality.

Technically we are now working with a much better PVC system, less variation dimensionally means that it goes the through the various processes with less errors, ultimately and aesthetically giving a much better looking product. Based on feedback from Installations and our own observations, we have made further improvements like developing the Cotswold hinge with the Fersina legs and profile related end cap to make it easier to fit, right first time from a fabrication point of view. We are also putting tolerance pips onto the casement striker (window keep) to eradicate any potential movement; we will see these arrive by the end of May.

This week we have taken delivery of the new "STUGA" saw, this will be used to cut all the cills and Bay components, this will also enable us to cut cills direct from our ProfitMaker computer software, giving the option to optimise the cill lengths, to reduce waste and, more importantly, ensure every cill is cut even more precisely to the right size and perfectly square, making sure the final product is spot on.
