More windows and doors from award-winning Safestyle!

Safestyle's Gemma Caves and Mark Scaife receive the Employer of the Year awardWe are delighted to announce that Safestyle Manufacturing & Logistics has won two further awards. Firstly, the British Safety Council International Safety Award for 2011, continuing our impressive award-winning run, with the Safestyle “factory” in Barnsley having previously won the coveted International Safety Award every year since 2000. The award clearly demonstrates our commitment to the health, safety and well-being of our employees and is an outstanding achievement.

For a company to win this award they have to demonstrate with clear evidence their comprehensive Health & Safety polices, showing commitment to Health & Safety throughout, from boardroom management all the way to shop floor. A company must be committed to promoting a positive culture for safety in all areas of the business, with great importance placed on the winning organisations showing competence in management of Health & Safety, and providing clear evidence on improvements achieved in Health & Safety through the year. We’re very proud to have demonstrated our worthiness of winning the award again, with clear improvements in all areas.

On the window and door production side, the new glass arrissor machine for our glass toughening process continues to improve both performance and the finished double glazing product. With this and the completion of the furnace service, we have been able to increase the number of glass pieces through the furnace. The resulting improvement in performance means we have had less rejects in quality checks, and have been able to remove the night shift furnace team.

The PVC factory performance continues to incrementally increase in respect of output per person whilst reducing the cost per frame. We continue to focus heavily on any quality defects within both the PVC and glass factories, with our Production Managers being seconded on to quality improvement projects for a month at a time.

Multiple quality projects are underway to reduce any material waste in all departments, these have yielded successes so far and we are stepping up the efforts. Now the arrissor project is finishing we have a new cill cutting machine to install at the end of April. This will significantly reduce the current off-cut waste through improved optimisation and cutting processes. The new asset will be able to cut all cills and the ancillaries that are required for installations. In addition, there are a number of projects regarding the value stream on the double glazed door line process, plus improving optimisation across the Style group.

As both the profile change and the arrisor project draw to close, we are back to what we do best, which is making high quality, energy saving PVCu windows and doors, right first time, on time, every time. The photos coming through of fitted homes from Safestyle customers are looking great and it’s amazing how many more homes we're fitting this year, with over a 1000 a week across England and Wales.

De-snagging the profile change and reducing waste at the factory has been one of our top priorities, with several minor issues being ironed out by our a fully cross-functional team in place to resolve any issues. Root causes have been understood and solutions implemented and developed. With the arrisor running it has been a great success, reducing the furnace cullet losses to well below industry best of 1%.

As ever with Safestyle, we are looking at ourselves, our teams and our departments to challenge the processes and work closer with our customers, both internal and external. We have done this many times before, and we’re taking it to the next level.

What we have seen from the start of the year, with the increased fit levels, has meant we are working better and even more efficiently to fulfil these volumes. The "problems" we have had our problems our competition would love to have, what with vehicle constraints, working additional shifts, planning the factory… we’ve been addressing them and learning from them at every stage.  The important thing is that we are constantly looking at continuous improvement, giving our customers the exceptional levels of service they have enjoyed and rightfully expect from Safestyle UK. We're working smarter and involving all stakeholders across the group, making the small changes that could make the big differences.

This year, the managers and staff at our Barnsley site will be taking part in a '3 Peaks Challenge' to raise funds for the Safestyle’s chosen charities. We want to make this a huge success, so we need lots of sponsorship… we’ll be waving our forms at everybody very soon!

We are also thrilled to announce that Safestyle Manufacturing & Logistics have won the award for 'Employer of the Year' at the ITS Business Awards - more to come on that! In the meantime, check Safestyle out on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
